when this fandom was alive, it liked to paint grendel as a vulgar, incompetent shithead who was only good at being an asshole. i’m not fucking down with that.
that is such a gross flanderization of a homeless, queer, mentally ill, rightfully and justifiably angry person who’s gotten nothing but shit thrown at him from every authority figure he’s ever had.
just because someone’s poor, disabled, distrustful of cops, in a bad financial situation, has a hard time communicating, and/or was never properly educated doesn’t mean they have no life skills, only ever feel one emotion, can’t read or write intelligently, etc.
grendel is a good cook; he’s a fantastic visual artist, poet, storyteller, philosopher, and musician; he knows how to groom himself despite incredibly limited resources; he can pick up pretty much any job and do it – jacks of all trades are just as valuable as aces of one; he’s empathetic, protective, and tender when he doesn’t feel like him or his loved ones are being threatened.
his circumstances are tragic and unfortunate, but they aren’t his fault. he’s not some fucking jackass who doesn’t care and never tries. he does try. the world just has a way of kicking him down whenever he tries to get back up, and it’s perfectly understandable that he’d snap. anybody in his position would become fed up with it. he did try. he wasn’t listened to, even when he was making an effort to do the right thing, and then – when he lost his best friend because of the government’s neglect of their poor & disenfranchised citizens – he was blamed for his hurt and frustration. everybody fucking forgets that.
people who paint grendel as nothing but a jaded dickhead and an idiot have clearly never been in grendel’s position.
and if that’s how you view people in grendel’s position – like they’re dense, lazy assholes who just don’t work hard enough; like they’re useless, not multifaceted, unfeeling, over-reactive, and essentially sub-human – i don’t fucking trust you at all.
