grendel’s a good cook  –  modern grendel is, anyway.

a dwindling exclusivity towards eating human meat has caused grendel to all-but-lose his lack of selectivity.  i wouldn’t call him a picky eater;  he’s adventurous with flavor and, considering the fact that he’s eaten some of the most rancid shit on the planet     ( live organs;  full bladder and bowel ),     it’s understandable that he’d be able to stomach  –  or even enjoy  –  items of acquired taste, especially those that would have served as a natural part of his diet in the wild, such as pickled eggs, uncooked fish, or bizarre pizza toppings. 

the most that puts him off is texture.  he could, say, eat a raw onion, but not a raw tomato;  the onion tastes worse, and he likes the taste of tomato in soup / ketchup / sauce, but he’d rather eat the onion, because the texture of tomato pulp and seeds makes him sick.

with these few but frequent limitations, he’s learned to work around his palate and what he can and cannot stand putting in his mouth, and has developed  –  alongside various other aspects of his humanity  –  a much more nuanced enjoyment of food.  he’s no critic, and certainly no professional chef, but 1600 years on earth and a constant hunger pang would drive just about anybody to picking up a frying pan.

grendel is also Very Much the type to only follow a recipe up until it tells him to do or add something he doesn’t like;  recipes are just a base, and he puts his own spin on everything afterwards.  his specialty is seafood, breakfast food, barbecue, and curry;  he’s weakest in making sweets / baked goods and, surprisingly enough, putting together a decent sandwich.     ( you’d be shocked at how much of a two-handed job that is. )

he’s not so great at plating things, but he can set up a pretty picnic.  bread and fruit are things he rewards himself with at the end of a paycheck.  grab a bag of beef jerky, heat up a pretzel, boil an egg, or cut up some pineapple, mango, raspberries,  &  kiwi   –   and you’ve got yourself a premium selection of Grendel’s Favorite Snacks.
